loco for coco.

this post is also live on the healthy and FABulous www.getfitafterbaby.com
this is seriously my fridge. right now.
my love for l’eau du coconut aka coconut water started when i was having a series of tests done over what my specialist essentially diagnosed as ‘exertion migraines’. each and every time i was getting my sweat on, i was being hit with some pretty intense migraines. the doctor called it an exertion migraine. i called it a hot yoga hangover. then a genius co-worker heard me out and told me to try drinking coconut water post-hot-yoga, purely because it is an awesome, clean source of electrolytes.
i haven’t had an ‘exertion migraine’ since. and if that doesn’t float your healthy boat, here are ten more reasons you should be drinking coconut water:
1. it’s a kick-ace natural isotonic bevy and has an ideal level of electrolytic balance for our bodies.
2. it’s naturally sterile. If you want to eat clean, that’s real clean.
3. it raises metabolism.
4. coconut water promotes weight loss.
5. it will balance your ph and reduce the risk of cancer.
6. it tastes delicious. for real.
7. 3rd world countries use coconut water iv’s to save lives. It has unreal anti-virus, anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties to cure illness.
8. low sodium. low [natural] sugars.
9. high potassium. high chloride.
10. almost each of the above 9 reasons would also benefit your child[ren].
[11. shhh. it is amazing to drink after a few glasses of vino on mommy's rare night out to avoid any hangover at all!]
so drink up. weight down. and don’t hog it either – because if my Marcus is any indicator, even a ‘selective’ toddler will love it too.

how to do life and do organic. at the same time.

i used to hear of people eating organic and think to myself: must be nice to be rich and have time to do that. i thought it meant more time & more money than us asparagus-steaming poor folk who only have 20 minutes to make meals because work/childcare/social life/life in general are waiting.

well gone are those days. when i was on mat leave, marcus rarely if ever ate food out of a jar. i made it all, with few [organic] exceptions. i loved it. i loved knowing exactly what was going into that tiny precious bod. but when i had to go back to work, i worried that it would mean we'd be dining on skillet sensations [no preservatives? sure. because there's so much sodium there isn't even room for them.] because of our busy life. and i've gone to good lengths to find a whole lotta ways to keep our bods on great, healthy, and lotso organic diets.... to start with, most of our day to day foods are a la pc organic: it's not expensive, and it's awesome. breakfast looks like this combo:

are you thinking: uh, isn't that a jar of organic butternut squash? heck yes it is! sneak that goodness into the batter - you get a sweet, delicious addition to the already yummy pancakes. takes 10 minutes totes. i can handle that. even with life. plus it's a sweet victory to get your kid to eat a serving of vegetables before 8 am. throw a handful of blueberries in and you are talking one heck of a well balanced meal.

we also don't have a cookie jar. instead marcus has his own snack jar - loaded with a wicked variety of organic cereal bars, granola bars, raisins, cocoa rice bars, fruit twists... he loves it. we loves it:
and we throw a twist on classic faves:
looks like a grilled cheese right? mais non. that's a nutritious mountain of whole wheat DHA omega bread, organic cheese, and natural selections turkey. good times i tell you. good times.

now we aren't all organic and dha over here. we take the kid out for fro yo weekly and i'd be lying if i said he has never said to me "i want some chippies!". we're human. but we're healthy. and we still have time for this much fun:
