this morning i told marcus he was going to have his first martial arts lesson in the afternoon.
clearly he did not know what that meant. and i didn't let on a single detail as i wanted his reaction to it to be all his own and in the moment :)
marcus wakes up and tells me he is spiderman [pronounced 'piderman']. he shoots webs out of his wrists over breakfast and told me i should be his 'wasp' for trick or treating. side note: he also told me i should be a cow [uh. thanks kid] and then redeemed himself by saying i should dress up like his princess mama [CUTE]. anyways. we are all avengers. all the time. he insists on wearing his avenger shirts. he wears avenger fancy pants. santa may or may not be delivering a full line up of avenger figures under the tree in t-minus two months minus one day but who's counting?
so. with all the avenger action moves going on in my living room. bedroom. bathroom. backseat. you get it? i saw that the school was offering martial arts at a nearby-but-offsite-facility and jumped at it. i figured probably a relevant time to start teaching him the discipline and respect behind martial arts. that and perhaps the importance of not swinging a swift right at me at 7:15am because apparently 'piderman had beef with wasp that morning. [side eye to 'piderman]
well he came home and couldn't wait to get back into his new martial arts uniform - which he now calls his 'hitting pants' and 'sensei shirt' and show me his new moves.
are you kidding me? he told me on the way home he had learned something called a 'kick back' but when he got those little arms warmed up he was practicing this full-on-action-packed-combination he had learned. and none of those tiny punches were directed my way which made them all the more fun to photograph. i was impressed people.
check this out:
my faves are the two top right photos. he first did his combo then pretended he got hit and there were more photos of him pretending to fall down that were so animated and so funny. but there's only so much room in one iphone app collage people.
i intended to wait until sunday and write a much more well-thought-out-blog post and include this collage. but i tucked that pint sized sensei into his little bed and couldn't wait a single night to share it. we are only one lesson in, and granted today was so exciting for marcus that i doubt he came home with any new understanding of discipline or respect or his left hook. but i hope that with time + a few more friday afternoons with his sensei, he will really grow to understand that even avengers need to show an awesome level of respect to themselves and the 'bad guys'. [including 'piderman.]
here's hoping your weekend is filled with pumpkins, halloween-ish fun + not with a swift right swing to the head. because from one avenger to another - we can all use a little weekend 'kick back' now and then ;)
happy friday.
love kare + m
