the 'marcus cup' aka celebrating the big 3.0

i'm not going to post some sentimental emo-style single-mom sob story being all 'oh my baby is growing up too fast' in light of his third birthday.

i'll save that for wednesday.

but tonight? i'm totally going to indulge in the highlights of the 'marcus cup' soccer party. 13 kids. with twice as many parents. our first attempt at entertaining as a fam despite being divorced. size 4 soccer balls. 2 toddler soccer nets. a real.live. soccer pro who came to lead a toddler tournie. a table of toddler-eats that may or may not have been sponsored by pc organics [may not. but. they should be paying US by now. right?]. soccer ball cake pops. custom cookies to match his new custom man u kit. a 3D trophy cup cake. [a wasp's nest nearby to keep james busy].... who am i kidding here on with the photos.

1. having a 'soccer pro' come to the party was one of my fave parts. it meant the parents could stand around our little strikers with smart phones taking in every glorious minute. she led a warm up. she led drills. she played a scrimmage with the kids. the blog name ain't for nothing. my kid. seriously. loves. soccer. he loves it even more when his closest friends + fam are out there kicking the ball around with him. having the 'pro' there made him feel so cool and i was thrilled to see so many of the kids playing the field with him. and of course - everyone won a toddler-size trophy to take home.
2. aside from the unexpected guests [wasps], the park made for a perfect [+neutral. just saying] party place. the kids got to hit up the splash pad. the soccer field. the play structure. and the pavilion that we decked out with a water station + orange slices [obv] + extra balls + the trophy table + a modest fortune worth of helium balloons. it might have also been a little awkward having the party at either of our houses given the new shape of our fam. so the park was a perfect fit.
3. one of my fave highlights was when we sang happy birthday to marcus. he started to sing with the group, and then as i approached him with the trophy cup cake, he realized everyone was singing to him. his face quickly blushed and it was really awesome to see his slightly bashful expression. i could tell by that expression that he felt all of the love that came to the soccer field in the form of fam + friends. and that's what it was all about.
4. when marcus arrived at the party, instead of charging for cake. or treats. or a [GASP] juice box. he slowly walked in with his tiny jaw open wide and gasped [for reals this time] 'mommy. did you do all of dis?' i said yes. 'did you do all of dis just for me for my birthday?' laughing, i said yes. he just stood there for a minute and then said to me 'oh mommy. it all just looks so.so. beautiful' [which sounds more like 'bootyful and goes straight to my heart]. his honest appreciation for the [perhaps over the top but nonetheless] decorations made every bit of effort worthwhile.

5. sweet jules. the insane baker who decked out our dessert table. she has a website. she can make any dessert dream a reality. she did not ask me to blog comps. but she's done our fetes for two years now and we likey.
6. marcus serenaded the group with his fave biebs medley on his new lightning mcqueen microphone [thank you aunt loli]. he also took it to the splash pad, got to second base with haley and they may or may not have sang a duet.
7. the whole 'first time celebrating his birthday together despite us being apart' thing was a bit awkward. not for us. but for a few guests. james and i agree that our priority from here on out is to celebrate our son's birthday together. and base our guest list on the friends + fam who support marcus and both of his parents alike.

8. did christmas come early? because this kid sure got spoiled. rotten. with a huge remote control franchesco. and every other toy ever made for a three year old garcon. ever.
9. we got home from the party. [exhausted might i add] and we slept for two hours. as in until 4:00. shamelessly. and he was happily back in bed by 8:35. we like us some party. we like us some soccer ball cake pops. and we like us some sleep.
10. we are very.very.lucky. we are blessed to have such amazing friends + fam who came from near + far [ie hamilton + ajax] to celebrate our wonderful tinse. what made this the best birthday yet was simply the fact that marcus was old enough to appreciate every single person who joined us to celebrate. last night we laid in his tiny toddler bed together under a bedsheet fort, and he wanted to list all of the friends who came to party. i know he is three less two days. but i also know his heart far exceeds three less any days at all, and that his less-than-tiny-toddler heart was humbled by the awesomeness of yesterday. and i could not be prouder.

no really.

just wait until the sob story coming on wednesday ;)

ps. shout out to tim. who greeted me at the pavilion by saying 'happy anniversary of becoming a mother'. we laughed. but for serious? this week my head  + heart will be right back in that birthing suite on the night of august 21st and day of august 22nd, relishing in every memory of the experience of becoming a mother for the first [but not last] time. so thanks tim. for kick starting what is sure to be an emotional couple of days ;)
