happy mothers day.

if you don't know this already, i work in + out of malls all day long. so in the past week or two, i have seen so.many.ads. for the perfect mother's day diamond pendant/spa package/insert ridiculous gift that has nothing to do with the amazingness of motherhood here. with each one i saw, it kind of crept under my skin. what is the deal? why would you need the spence diamond family pendant to celebrate being a mother? even if that guy on the radio says 'family' twenty seven times in a thirty second commercial, 'family' has nothing to do with a pendant.

i totally get how amazing mother's day is. i've been an emo single mom mess all week. secretly. post-bedtime and pre-phone date only. i don't know why. maybe because it's the first single mom mother's day. maybe because marcus is starting kindergarten in the fall [that's right, a whole year early. mothers day is no time for modesty people.] and i'm going through that whole omg time is going by so fast slow down and crawl into my nook again and before you know it he's going to be asking for the keys to the rogue instead of the mini cooper. so yeah. between the mother's day crafts that he literally. sneaked out of his tiny backpack. and hid under.my.pillow. before going to his dad's for the afternoon. [yes, seriously. it's making me all emotional just to type that.] and going through his baby book [custom made by ednamae on etsy. go get one.], and a glass of red wine? this heart is feeling it. big time.

one thing that is certainly different this time around? my understanding of the whole concept of expectations. i wasn't expecting a single [mom] thing for mother's day. i didn't expect the spence diamond family pendant. or breakfast in bed. or a spa package. there's certainly something amazing about someone close to you acknowledging your role as mother on this specific sunday. it is the most important role in this woman's life, and one that i take so much pride in + invest so much of my heart and my self in. my parents sent me a really nice card. my father told me a few extra times this week how he is very proud of how i'm [we're] doing with marcus. that meant more to me than any spa package could.

being this kid's mom everyday makes for the best chapter of my life yet - and it's only going to get better from here on out. marcus took me out for a mother's day pizza date [a rare + awesome treat + excuse not to do dishes] and then we are going on a single-mom/son date to a music night supporting local women+children's shelters. we might even share a scoop of french vanilla ice cream + cut fruit on top.

single mom photo shoot on mothers day.

i really try not to ever take for granted how lucky i am to be sharing this life with this wonderful little boy. + being a mom? it's kind of what i do best. well ... that and my spence diamond commercial impression. i'm pretty solid at that too ;)

happy mother's day to any + every present + future mama who might stumble upon this blog post today, or any day. whether it was filled with extravagant gifts, or like mine - extravagant love + appreciation for the incredible blessings that come in the form of a 2 year old boy in my life every day.

big love,
kare
