sun + day

it's twenty four degrees and sunny.  we set out on marcus' vehicle of choice: the chopper. but first he tells me, later, we will take out the mini coop.deal. because if it's still sunny out post-nap, clearly. we are coming back out for more.

back to the chopper. we set out with no real destination which is kind of perfect for a sun+day shared bw a soccer mom and her toddler boy. marcus is heavy enough now [all 37 pounds of pure man] to really cruise that balance chopper at a sweet speed. so i do my best to keep up and occassionally let out a soccer mom yelp when he does things like: pop a chopper wheelie. pull a tight corner. or cruise down the steepest little hills he can find with a smile that takes up the entire real estate of his face.

so off we cruise in the sun+day breeze.

and we struck solid gold people. well, soccer mom solid gold.

suddenly we spy across the suburb a sweet digger. no wait. not just a sweet digger [side note: my how times have changed], but an entire construction site. this is the part where our sun+day chopper excursion turned into dismount the chopper-mom-can-you-peeeeese-hold-my-bike-so-we-can-hike-the-construction-site?

obv. marcus takes on a total don tallman stance, with his curious eyes not missing a single detail of the site and his little arms either swinging so deliberately at his sides while he takes extra long steps or instead perfectly crossed across his little chest as he examines his rad finds and we discuss the following important questions:

what does the digger do. what does the forklift do. how do you know which one is the fork lift. where is the arm. where is the cab. which maCHine [as marcus pronounces that CH so hard it hurts] has tires and which one has a tread. what does the tread do. how many maCHines do we see. what might that forklift be working on tomorrow? he tells me: it will lift something very heavy. well let's find something it might lift. so we found a skid of concrete blocks and he says 'well. that's it. we gunna need that forklift over here.' as if he's about to take over the site and make things happen himself.

we found a six foot rock pile. we found an enormous dirt pile that we held hands + scaled in the sun. we found more skids of bricks. we tried to figure out what they might be building. marcus said: they building a big big fort. done. i'm sure the future residents of the reitrement home would chuckle if they heard that. i did. i also realized this morning that 2.6 years ago i had no idea what a forklift was [seriously] or how it differs from the other maCHines. now i am so excited to help him learn that i find myself googling fun facts about machines to share with this little sweet pete of mine.

can we talk about how this all went down under the wicked warm sun on a perfect pre-organic lunch outing? can we talk about how i may or may not have had a perfect chai latte in hand while my 2.6 year old and i shot the you-know-what on a massive pile of dirt, deliberating over where they might be planning to build the fort monster's cage.

i want to bottle him. i want to bottle the sun shine. i want to hold onto that hike right down to the moment on the ride home where he said so perfectly after a moment of careful thought: "mommy? i want peckeroni for lunch peese.'

soccer mom sigh. i don't know that it can get better than this.but i'll let you know after we take out the 'mini coop'.

hoping your saga was as sunny as our sauga today + always.

yours in digging,

kare
